History of the aerial tramway
The aerial tramway operating to Mt Lomnický štít is a fascinating feat of human persistence and technical skill. Imagine that the materials used for constructing this cable car were carried on the backs of people from nearby villages up to the summit. This cable car, built under the initiative of Juraj Orságh, the director of the State Spa in Tatranská Lomnica, was constructed in 1936 and officially opened in 1941.
The cable car route consists of two parts: from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso with the interchange station at Štart, which served as the starting point of a sledge track and a bobsled track leading to Grandhotel Praha in the past. It is rather interesting that the material for constructing the cable car was transported to Skalnaté pleso by horses, while almost 300 tons of material was carried up to Mt Lomnický štít to the altitude of 2,634 metres manually.
Approximately 70 workers from Lendak, Spišská Belá and Kežmarok helped build the cable car. A single installation cable was carried by 36 men to the summit. The cable car buildings were carved out of stone from a nearby quarry. The cable car still stands today as a symbol of the connection between humans and the majestic nature of the Tatras.

The legend of Dedo
In 1770, before Tatranská Lomnica existed, the Fabry family from Kežmarok named Mt Lomnický štít Dedo (Grandfather), believing it was the highest peak in the Tatras. When looking at the peak from Kežmarok, it resembles an old man with a long nose and a beard. Conquering Dedo was once the boldest ambition of local youths who spoke of it as being unassailable. Now, you too have the chance to "conquer" the legendary Grandfather.
